The touring that I have done over the past two years has been the result of working with a huge number of bands passing through the venues I have been engineering at. However, as well as touring occasionally some bands like to take an engineer just to particular gigs; for example support gigs for larger bands. Before engineering a band at an important gig, I make every effort to spend some time in a rehearsal studio, honing the particular sound the band wish to achieve. This includes mixing techniques, use of effects and overall sound of the band. Many bands like to have a more raw sound live than to their recordings; conversly, some bands wish to sound exactly like a recording when playing live.

Xavier Floyd Firebird Before discussing a fee with a band I endeavour to ascertain exactly what services and commitments a band requires, and if any equipment hire would be of use. For example, by including a fee for the hire of a TC Electronics M-One effects processor, it is possible for me to build up a library of effects tailored to the artists'/bands' music for use at every event. This helps to create continuity, and increases the consistancy between performances.

By precisely defining the level of commitment required, I am able to tailor my response accordingly. A band with regular touring work will require increased commitment, including rehearsal time, than a band requiring an engineer for a single gig or short festival tour.

Guitar (Blue) As an example, one band I am currently working with had a successful week-long UK tour last year, and regular dates throughout the year since. However, they are currently in the studio writing new songs and developing a new sound, and so my commitment is limited to around 2 rehearsals per month at present.

Alternatively, another band I work with are shortly departing on a three week UK tour, and have rehearsal time before that.

A third band are currently in the studio recording. However, due to time commitments I have not been able to join them, and so they are working with a close associate of mine.

Bands looking for recording engineers should be advised I have no recording facilities personally; however, I am able to offer mix-down and audio editing.
